Scottish drumming is a fun, unique and demanding rudimental discipline. It borrows elements from Swiss and American rudimental drumming, traditional Scottish and Irish musical idioms, and even some swing and jazz phrasings. The goal of any competitive bagpipe band is to field a highly competitive drum corps in the Scottish competition circles.
On the surface, Scottish drumming may seem very simple and easy to pick up, when compared to the contemporary American marching band and drum corps style of drumming. This is often the case in the music used for parades and general performances. We use simple music in these circumstances in order to give people experience and early exposure to public performances. Competition music and more elaborate performance tunes are far more challenging for drummers.
If you've never played in a pipe band that's OK. Many drummers with high school marching band backgrounds convert over with a little retraining. Although styles are similar, Scottish snare drumming is uniquely different.

We will provide you with instruction to cross over from your previous experience. Interested drummers must be able to physically carry a single snare for extended parades etc. You will be expected to participate in local performances, fund raising events, local rehearsals Wednesday evening
( in Dunedin for now), and competitions throughout Florida and the South Eastern USA.
If you are interested please call Hurly @ 727-355-3944 to obtain a code to our DRUM CORPS private page
How the process works-
Members must be in good physical shape and able to march in extended parades/shows during all months of the year. We take pride in maintaining a standard skill level to participate in our organization. Your skill level and ability to meet this standard will be evaluated by our Pipe Major or Lead Drummer. If you do not meet the minimum skill level to play with our performance or competition band, we encourage you to continue to build your skill and arrange a future audition for our organization.
Your Membership Audition
We suggest preparing with any four-part tune to be played while marching. Please be prepared to demonstrate how to properly tune and maintain your instrument.
The next step is to schedule an audition with a band representative to evaluate your skill level and ability to play with the band. We are not looking for perfection.
Once you have completed your audition, your scores will be evaluated and sent to the Board of Directors (BOD) for consideration for membership to the band. The BOD will make their decision not only on your playing ability but other factors relevant to making a good addition to the band.
If you are accepted as an active playing band member, you will then be registered with the band and your annual dues of $75 are due within 30 days of acceptance. Annual dues are assessed each October 1. If you are not accepted as an active playing member you may be placed in Student status. There are no annual fees for students. Students do not perform publicly with the band, and have limited participation at rehearsals, and are not issued uniform components. Students may re-audition on a date at the discretion of the Pipe Major or Less Drummer.
Outside instruction is highly encouraged and the responsibility of the student.
Our band offers very limited instruction but can refer you to Instructors at the students expense.
Once your application has been submitted, you will receive contact phone numbers for you to call to schedule your audition. We are excited to have received your application and look forward to seeing you soon! Best of luck with your audition.
Suncoast United Pipes & Drums offers a general performance band as well as a competition group. Not all members will qualify or want to complete and that's OK! All members must meet minimum skill and physical ability requirements to be a playing member of the band. Only those with fun upbeat attitudes need apply!
